Biobest are pleased to offer testing for Equine Strangles ELISA and PCR

Strangles Antibody ELISA

This test detects antibodies to the Streptococcus equi SeM virulence factor. Results have shown strong correlation with existing test system available from other providers in the UK and high antibody titres have been seen in horses during Strangles outbreaks. During an outbreak positive ELISA results can be used to allocate horses to management groups and select horses requiring further investigation. Biobest ELISA results are reported as a percentage positive value (which can be converted to a corrected OD by dividing by 100) and Biobest vets will provide full support on the interpretation of results obtained.

Strangles PCR

Our PCR test detects and discriminates between Strep. equi equi and Strep. equi zooepidemicus DNA in guttural pouch swabs, nasal swabs or abscess pus. In many circumstances PCR is preferable to conventional culture due to its speed and accuracy, with same day turnaround possible in the laboratory for urgent samples.

Testing for Strangles Antibody ELISA will be performed on a Mon, Wed and Fri. Strangles PCR will be performed on a Mon and Wed, please refer to the test schedule for further information.
