Farm Animal Manager

Maggie Carson

Maggie joined Biobest in 2014 as the bovine administrator for the HiHealth Herdcare team, promoted to Deputy Farm Animal Manager in 2016 and subsequently to Farm Animal Manager in 2019. A University of Edinburgh chemistry graduate, she spent a few summers working and travelling in America before taking on her role here at Biobest. Maggie is responsible for the day to day management of the bovine testing; writing reports, ensuring records are kept up to date and preparing accreditation and sales certificates. She also plays an active role in advising new and current members.



Deputy Cattle Health Scheme Manager

Karen Johnston

Karen has been involved with Hi Health since 2000 and has continued on with the health scheme after the merger with Herdcare which led to creation of HiHealth Herdcare. She is the first point of contact to our Orkney and Northern Scotland members. Her main interests are BVD and Johne’s eradication and control. Karen has been awarded an MBE for services to the livestock industry in helping eradicate BVD from the Islands of Orkney.

 





Veterinary Staff

Paul Burr BSc(VetSci)Hons BVM&S PhD MRCVS. (Lab Director)

Paul is the Managing Director of Biobest. He has 5 years’ experience of farm practice, followed by 10 years of diagnosis and research in infectious diseases. Along with managemnt duties, advising vets and farmers on infectious diseases and health scheme operation is an important part of his role at Biobest. Paul has regularly presented papers at the BCVA meetings and often does talks to vets and farmer meetings on infectious disease. He is also a member of BCVA council.



Susan Duthie BVMS PhD CertVR MRCVS (Veterinary Manager)

Susan graduated from the University of Glasgow Vet School and went straight into mixed practice. Five years later, she returned to Glasgow to complete a PhD encompassing veterinary virology. After completing a related post-doctoral study, she joined Biobest in 2003. Susan has daily involvement with the HiHealth Herdcare Cattle Health Scheme, providing reports and advice for members, and is a member of the CHeCS Technical committee.



Kate Haig BVMS, MRCVS (Veterinary Adviser)

Kate graduated from the University of Glasgow veterinary school. Her experience within the veterinary industry includes research, general practice and the State Veterinary Service. She has also worked as a freelance copy-editor and proofreader specialising in scientific, medical and veterinary textbooks. Kate joined Biobest in 2005 and provides veterinary support to Biobest customers, including current and prospective members of HiHealth Herdcare.



Rebecca Mearns, MA VetMB CertSHP MRCVS (Veterinary Adviser)

Rebecca joined Biobest as Senior Veterinary Advisor in 2015 to work within the HiHealth Herdcare cattle team but also with a wider remit to offer advice and expertise across the board on ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats). Prior to her role at Biobest, Rebecca has been a Veterinary Investigation Officer at Penrith Veterinary Investigation Centre, worked in a similar role at SAC Edinburgh and spent several years in general veterinary practice. She is also a member of the Sheep Veterinary Society Committee and the Goat Veterinary Society.



Sanne Dolieslager, DVM PhD MRCVS (Clinpath Adviser)

Sanne joined Biobest Laboratories as a Veterinary Advisor in 2014 and her main role here is to work as part of the clinical pathology team. After graduating from Utrecht University she continued her studies at the University of Glasgow and gained a PhD in veterinary microbiology and immunology. Prior to joining Biobest she worked in small animal veterinary practice and has taught undergraduates at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh



Kate Cheeseman, BVM&S MRCVS (Clinpath Adviser)

Kate joined Biobest in 2017, mainly working in the clinical pathology team. Kate graduated from university in the USA with a degree in biochemistry, working for several years in clinical research and scientific writing fields. She continued her studies in Scotland, completing her veterinary degree at the University of Edinburgh, and worked in mixed practice and small animal practice before joining Biobest. At Biobest, Kate primarily works with biochemistry, haematology, parasitology, bacteriology and tissue testing on a variety of species and has a keen interest in pathology and individual disease investigations.



The Biobest scientific and administrative team are all involved in our cattle sector business with a focus providing a high quality of service and advice to our HiHealth Herdcare members. Other staff with a direct input on your membership services are:



Farm Animal Administrator

Laura Hunter

Laura joined Biobest as our Farm Animal Administrator in June 2019, providing administrative support, and maintaining databases for the HiHealth Herdcare scheme.  Laura comes from an agricultural background, having grown up on a farm in Lanarkshire where she still plays an active role rearing her family's herd of Highland cattle and showing them at agricultural events across the UK.  



Sarah Mackey

A University of Lincoln forensic science graduate, Sarah joined the farm animal team at Biobest in August 2019.  Prior to joining us, Sarah worked in an administrative capacity within the whisky industry.  At Biobest she performs a variety of administrative duties which includes databasing, sending out reports and generating health scheme certificates.  Outside of work Sarah enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring the local area.
