Biobest gain USDA certification for Johne's PCR test
Biobest have recently passed the 2009 Johne's disease faecal proficiency test provided by the United States Department of Agriculture and gained certification for this. Whilst there is no perfect test for Johne's disease this proficiency test result confirms that the Johne's faecal PCR yields excellent results and the ability to report samples within a few days rather than months is a substantial advantage over other culture to farmers wishing to make progress in Johne's control.
Susan Duthie, Veterinary manager at Biobest stated that "We are pleased to have passed the US Department of Agriculture proficiency test in faecal testing for Johne's disease. Our Johne's PCR test takes less than a day to perform and is therefore a more practical approach than traditional culture techniques. Due to the nature of Johne's disease, it is difficult to identify infected animals before they become ill, but dual testing of blood and dung samples improves the detection rate and is recommended in certain circumstances such as when adding animals to the herd"
