Liver Fluke and Neospora Testing

Biobest have added two new tests to our cattle diagnostics schedule for viral and parasitic antibodies.

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite which is recognised as a major cause of bovine abortion and still birth worldwide. Serum testing can be used as an effective screening tool to identify herd infection and allow the vet practice and its client to make suitable diagnosis and management decisions. This may include a culling policy for antibody positive animals and selective breeding using seronegative cattle.

Biobest already offer the reference IIFT for individual serum samples. We now test twice weekly for Neospora caninum antibodies using an ELISA. This test may be used on serum or bulk milk samples. Launch price - £6.50

Liver Fluke (Fasciola hepatica) causes the parasitic disease fascioliasis in cattle and sheep. Diagnosis is through faecal egg counts and/or serum testing allowing the relevant control through treatment and herd management. There is a range of anthelminthics available for treating fluke but pasture and herd management also play a large part because of the life cycle of the fluke. Serum testing allows herd health status to be initially diagnosed and then future testing may be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and control.

Biobest tests twice weekly for Fasciola hepatica specific antibodies using an ELISA. This test can be carried out on individual serum samples or bulk milk. The latter is particularly effective in managing dairy herd treatment and performance. Launch price - £5.50
